An inferno allegedly triggered by a welding work, has flattened eight furniture shops and a canteen, opposite Federal Government College, Warri.
According to eye witnesses, the blaze started few minutes past 9:00 am today, Sunday March 30, when spark from a burglary proof being installed at the front of the canteen by a welder, ignited inflammable items such as gas cooker, gallon of fuel and deep freezer.
But for the quick response by the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Comrade Agbateyiniro Weyinmi Isaac, who called Men of the Delta State Fire Service and NPA Delta Port Fire Service, the blaze, which also burnt BEDC cables along the road, would have spread to other structures along the axis.
One of the victims, Yakubu Sani, who was apparently in shock when Fresh Angle International rushed to the scene at about 11:15 am, said his industrial machine worth five hundred and fifty thousand naira ( N550,000.00) four sets of chairs and other valuables, were completely destroyed by the fire.
The account of Yakubu Sani, was not different from his fellow furniture makers, who received the distress calls while celebrating the Eid Mubarak in the mosque.
Warri South Local Government Council Supervisors for Environment and Health, Honourables Femi Okorodiden and Hon. Ese Gift Deduwa as well as Mr. Sunny Omene Mabiaku, who raced to the scene on the instruction of Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Comrade Agbateyiniro Weyinmi Isaac, monitored the fire service teams of Delta State Fire Service and NPA Delta Port Service, ensuring that the operations of the fire service men weren't disrupted.
The Senior Fire Supretendent, Delta State Fire Service, Warri, Kpikpi Harrison, told This Soaring International Newspaper, that he received a distress call at about 9.26 am while worshipping at Word of Life Bible Church, Warri and had to mobilize the fire service truck to the scene within few minutes.
The Senior Fire Officer, NPA Delta Port Fire Service, Warri, Mohammed Yakubu, also confirmed the quick notification by authorities of Warri South Local Government Council, resulting in the swift action, which prevented the blaze from spreading.
